A piano can bring such immense joy and pleasure. Of course, this is when it’s operable and in good condition. While older, more aged pianos can be beautiful with a classic appeal when properly maintained; there will ultimately come a time when it makes more sense financially to make that replacement.
Like all mechanical machines, caring for and tending to a piano will require immense amounts of work and careful watching. It’s a process that one can naturally learn through ownership. Unfortunately, when it comes time to replace, donate, or get rid of that old piano, the process will be nowhere near as easy.
Disassembly, if even possible, is the beginning of the potential problems. One will not only need to decide what to do with the instrument but how to accomplish the desirable. Donating the instrument is a viable option, but it merely raises the concern of how to deliver the piano.
Some might not have access to a truck or van, and it’s not like you can set the piano outside and let the garbage men take it.
Understanding Our Pricing
If you think piano removal from a third-story condo or apartment is difficult, you should try properly pricing the job. Since pricing can be so convoluted, many removers like that excuse to cheat customers. It’s a common scheme we’ve heard about many times.
Many companies like to claim that they set their prices based on weight, space, or the overall difficulty of the job. It amounts to them not being able to set a price until the job is already done. Why? It becomes so much more difficult for the customer to dispute the trumped-up charges when the piano is in the truck and loaded up.
Most unsuspecting homeowners just end up paying the inflated charges the get the nightmare over with. Hiring us to do the job will not only get your contractual guarantees of satisfaction but always issue written quotes before the job begins.
This ensures that customers will only pay the charges cited to them before the job begins. Although pricing like this can be somewhat difficult, we’ve been in the business long enough to foresee what the removal will require.
Whether it is disassembling the instrument or a crane to get ground level, we’ll include all this with the free initial quote. Excellent customer service with a guarantee and smile is what sets us apart!
Why Hire A Professional Piano Remover?
The sheer complexity of removing a large instrument like a piano is just one of the justifiable reasons to hire a professional. Throw in that the removal might require disassembly or specialized tools, and it only adds to the reasons.
And this is not to even mention disposing of the piano. If one chooses to throw it away, it’s not like you can expect the garbage guy to take it. Some waste management organizations might dispose of pianos, but it’s something that will require prearrangement.
You’ll have to phone ahead to arrange the pickup, but there will also likely be ensuing fees for the services. Worst of all, of course, is the fact that they’ll require you to properly bag and get the item outside.
Getting a massive instrument such as a piano outside to the curb and bagging it is over half of the work. By the time you pay the hiked-up charges, you’d have been much better off just hauling the instrument away yourself. That’s why we have prided ourselves over the years on offering full-service piano removal.
Disassembly, tugging, lifting, hoisting, or toting, it doesn’t matter what the job calls for or the location, we’ll handle it with backed guarantees from the beginning to the very end.
Properly Donating Pianos
Even the most worn pianos can be salvageable. If the piano brought you joy over the years, give it the same opportunity to bring that same joy to someone less fortunate. And we will be more than happy to assist with that.
As a matter of fact, donating and recycling are two of our biggest pet peeves. Anytime something can be donated or recycled, we see to it that it gets to the appropriate designations!
Donating colossal items like a piano might seem more viable than other disposal options for several reasons. It’s not only the joy they can offer someone less fortunate, but one would think that most people getting such a high-ticket item for free would be more than willing to do all the heavy lifting disassembly and hauling takes.
Unfortunately, that is not always the case. When it is the case, however, it’s unsafe to have strangers on your property these days. Even a minor mishap could result in years and years of civil suits, followed by thousands in medical bills.
Our locally-based removal company has established long-standing working relationships with many other local establishments. To give you an idea of where your piano might be most beneficial here is a list of institutions we regularly work with:
- Elementary school
- High school
- Specialized musical training institutions
- Nonprofit organizations
- Retirement homes
- Service clubs
- Afterschool programs
- Musical dealers
The donation might come with the added benefit of tax deductions, so don’t forget to mention it if our techs don’t!
What About Recycling?
Speaking of recycling, that’s always another viable option for piano disposal. Believe it or not, recycling will prove no less difficult than donating or declaring the instrument as waste. That is, unless, you take advantage of our full-service removal experts.
Whether you decide to recycle, waste, or donate your old instrument, we make the process so much easier by doing the heavy lifting. Pianos contain a wide array of components and materials.
Wire, steel, metal, ivory, plastic, various metals, and wood, along with other components can serve as huge assets for any recycling firm.
Dismantling A Piano
Along with regular maintenance and cleaning, pianos require frequent tunings over the years.
Some musicians like to tune every session or so, depending on the previous wear. Regardless, tuning is necessary, but the problem is the tension. Steel wires, stretched taunt are constantly under tremendous tension. Simply cutting the cables or not winding them down properly before disassembly can be problematic.
Disregarding the tension could result in injuries or inflict surface damage. Since this is the case, we typically like to suggest amateurs or inexperienced individuals opt for professional assistance.
Other than that disassembly merely requires following a step-by-step process. Of course, it’s nowhere near as easy as that, but for interested parties, disassembly goes something like this:
- Open the lid of the piano, exposing the internal components
- With the piano deck now exposed, disassembly will begin here (also known as the area where the sheet music rests)
- The next step requires gaining access to the keys by removing the key cover screws
- With the keys taken care of, it’s time to move on to the foot pedal and lower mechanisms
- Access the lower components will likely require removing several components along with the lid itself
- The muffler or component that runs across the hammer will also need to be removed
- Removing the muffler will require locating and unscrewing the bracket screws
- The keys are next, and this generally requires pulling the individual keys up one at a time and lifting them out of alignment
- The next step is the loosening of the tension and this is where major problems can start
- First, loosen the tension on every string, starting at the far end and working in one direction, turn the pegs counterclockwise
- The key bed will become accessible and removable
- Disassemble side supports followed by the harp
